Vitamin D 60K/week – Need K2 too?

2025-06-15 04:56:24
Hi, I recently found out that my Vitamin D levels were very low, so my doctor prescribed me a weekly dose of Vitamin D3 — 60,000 IU. While researching, I came across multiple sources suggesting that Vitamin D should be taken with Vitamin K2 to ensure calcium is properly directed to bones and teeth, and not to soft tissues. I consulted two different physicians, but unfortunately, their guidance was inconsistent. One said Vitamin K2 is not necessary, while the other said it should be taken only with calcium supplements. Neither could explain how and when exactly K2 should be taken with high-dose D3. So my question is: Since I’m taking 60,000 IU of Vitamin D3 per week, should I be taking Vitamin K2 as well? If yes, what dosage and frequency (daily or weekly)? Also, could anyone recommend a good product or combination? Any evidence-based guidance or personal experiences would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Vitamin K2 is a part of many preparations. Almost all of them are approved by FSSAI. That means it is more like a food supplement than a "medicine" in the conventional sense. In such a situation my advice will be,  "Take it. It can't cause any harm".

Please share details Combining the 2 is more important,  where there is risk of cardiovascular diseases, not otherwise.

K2 is not absolutely mandatory, it’s likely beneficial when taking high doses of D3 regularly. It may help: Optimize bone health Prevent soft tissue calcification If your doctor didn’t contraindicated it, adding K2 is generally safe and may improve the effectiveness and safety of your Vitamin D therapy.

Yes, if you’re taking 60k IU of Vitamin D3 per week (which is about 8,571 IU per day), it is generally recommended to take Vitamin K2 alongside it, especially at higher D3 doses, to support calcium metabolism and reduce the risk of vascular calcification. Vitamin K2- 100–200 mcg daily (or 700–1400 mcg weekly if dosing once/week). Daily is more stable. Avoid if on blood thinners

In general practice the D3 is rarely given in combination with k2 . If there is calcium deficiency then Combine vit D3 with calcium .that will do the job

Also depends on whether you have calcium deficiency. If you have calcium deficiency then K2 is adviced, else only Vitamin D3 is enough.
