Foot swelling after an accident needs examination and an X-ray to rule out a fracture or dislocation; the photo alone is not enough. Keep the foot elevated, apply an ice pack wrapped in cloth for 15–20 minutes, and avoid weight-bearing until assessed. Do not massage or tightly bandage it.
Next Steps
Please see an orthopaedic doctor today for examination and X-ray; book a consultation with me if you need help reviewing the report. Go to emergency care immediately if the foot looks deformed, becomes numb or cold, pain is severe, or toes turn blue.

Hi regarding your query, and with less history noted on your foot swelling, there can be acute or chronic reasons. Acute reasons can be bone fracture, inflammation like cellulitis. Chronic reasons can be decreased movements of the foot or decreased superficial venous circulation causing edema.

more history and examination are needed, and an X ray along with further imaging may be required to rule out a fracture before advising treatment.

The localized inflammatory cascade causes capillary leaking and fluid accumulation to protect the injured structure. However, because significant swelling and inability to bear weight after an accident can easily mask an undisplaced hairline fracture or torn ligament, immediate radiological verification is essential before initiating definitive medical therapy. When blunt impact or twisting occurs, micro-vascular disruption leads to localized edema and hematoma formation. Attempting to massage or bear weight on an unassessed swollen foot risks worsening internal bleeding and displacing any potential bone injury.
