Swelling in both right and left leg?

2026-08-25 07:09:02
Hi Sir/Ma'am, I have this kind of inflammation in both right and left feet. And I have a previous history of Arthritis too. And I am getting fat day by day.So there are some basic questions to ask. 1.Which department should I consult? 2. Can I walk daily because there is both swelling and pain? 3.Also I feel sometimes that both my legs and my right hand are not working. So what can I do to solve all the problems If anyone can pls answer, it will be very much helpful. Thanks

Swelling of both feet with weight gain and arthritis history needs a physician first, not directly an orthopaedic doctor - in internal medicine we look for thyroid problem, anaemia, low protein, kidney or heart cause, and active arthritis. Yes, you can and should walk daily as tolerated; gentle walking, weight reduction and leg elevation at rest actually reduce swelling and joint pain.

Bilateral foot swelling combined with unexplained weight gain, joint pain, and limb weakness requires a structured medical workup. In a 40-year-old with an arthritis history, this pattern often points to metabolic issues (such as Hypothyroidism), an inflammatory arthritis flare-up, fluid retention, or nerve compression/neuropathy rather than a simple strain.
Next Steps
Department to Consult: Consult a General Physician / Internal Medicine Specialist or a Rheumatologist for a complete clinical examination. Initial Blood Tests: A doctor will likely recommend a Thyroid panel (TSH), Inflammatory markers (ESR, CRP, RA Factor/Anti-CCP), Kidney Function Test (Creatinine/Urea), and complete blood counts. Check the Weakness: If the feeling that your hand or legs "stop working" involves sudden numbness, dropping objects, or loss of balance, get evaluated promptly to rule out nerve involvement or neurological causes.
Health Tips
Walking Guidelines: You can do light, gentle 10 to 15-minute walks on flat surfaces, but avoid vigorous brisk walking or heavy impact while joints are actively painful and swollen. Leg Elevation: Elevate your feet on a couple of pillows while lying down to help drain fluid pooling in your ankles. Dietary Sodium: Reduce table salt, pickles, and processed snacks, as excess sodium worsens water retention in the legs. Avoid Regular OTC Painkillers: Do not take over-the-counter pain pills continuously without a prescription, as they can increase swelling and strain your kidneys.

Consult an MD Medicine, preferably with Rheumatology evaluation, for proper assessment. Considering the history of arthritis with bilateral swelling and pain, inflammatory/autoimmune causes should be ruled out. CBC, ESR, CRP, RF, anti-CCP ± ANA and thyroid/kidney function tests may be advised based on examination. Avoid strenuous activity and self-medication until evaluated.

Swelling in both legs and feet can be due to various reasons , it can be due to heart , liver or kidney pathology, can be due to one or more of the  medications you are taking. If you are getting fat day by day , get Thyroid profile also tested and since you have not mentioned what all medications you are taking since before , it could be due to any of the medications you might be taking. Yes ambulation or ealking for short distances will help , since you are having pain too , avoid walking long distance.
Next Steps
For your 3rd complaint , consult a Neurologist ,and also if swelling over your feet has increased sincesome days or it is gradually increasing , seek medical care by visiting nearby hospital, for this initially visiting MD Medicine doctor would be better
Health Tips
Keep your leg elevated at night by using pillows under both feet.

Hello. Bilateral foot swelling with weight gain and joint pain can have several causes, including arthritis, venous/lymphatic problems, thyroid disease, kidney/liver disease, cardiac causes or medication related edema. Please consult a General Physician/Medicine specialist first; Rheumatology/Orthopedics may be advised depending on examination. Although,in the picture shared by you I cannot appreciate significant swelling.
Next Steps
Regarding walking: gentle walking is usually beneficial, but avoid prolonged walking or strenuous exercise while the feet are significantly painful/swollen. Elevation of the legs and avoiding prolonged standing may help.
Health Tips
Since you mention that your legs and right hand sometimes feel weak/not working, please get an in-person neurological examination rather than treating this as arthritis.
