At first test her hemoglobin level. If her hemoglobin level is below 11 gm/dl then she requires further investigations to understand the cause and treatment will be according to the diagnosis. Iron deficiency is not the only reason of anaemia. So do not waste your money without knowing the reason of it.

Yes, your mother can use iron syrup, even if she has blood pressure and thyroid problems. Iron supplements are safe for BP and thyroid patients, as long as the dose is correct and taken properly. Before starting, it is best to know: • Her current hemoglobin level (Hb) • Her iron studies (ferritin, serum iron) if available But even without these, a standard safe dose can be used.
Next Steps
Recommended Iron Syrup Options (Safe for elderly) You can use any of these commonly used syrups: Haem UP syrup Dexorange syrup Autrin syrup Livogen syrup All are safe for BP and thyroid patients. For adults, especially elderly: 1–2 teaspoons (5–10 ml) once daily OR 5 ml twice daily (if Hb is significantly low) Start with 5 ml once daily and increase only if needed. When to Take It Best time: • After meals (to reduce stomach upset) • Avoid taking with tea/coffee (reduces absorption)

Hello, Before starting any iron syrup for your mother, a few important things must be checked first especially at her age (68 years) and with existing BP and thyroid issues. Iron is not started blindly because: The cause of low hemoglobin may be nutritional, chronic illness, thyroid-related, kidney-related, or due to blood loss. Iron supplements can interact with thyroid medications if not timed correctly. Excess iron can cause constipation, gastritis, or even worsen existing stomach issues. Dosage depends on actual hemoglobin level, serum ferritin, TSH levels, weight, and diet. Right now, you have not mentioned her Hb level, ferritin, TSH, or any symptoms  so giving a dose here would be unsafe. What you should do first: 1. Get her basic tests done: CBC Serum Ferritin TSH Kidney Function (KFT) 2. Based on these, we decide whether she even needs iron, and if yes, which type and how to space it with thyroid medication. Once these results are reviewed properly, I can guide you with: Correct iron type Safe schedule How to avoid side effects Diet modifications for natural Hb improvement If you want a personalised plan for your mother You can reach me privately on w.h.a.t.s.a.p.p nine three two six zero two zero five three six and I can review her reports and then guide you safely. This way she gets the right treatment without any risk or wrong dosing.

Hi I need few details Are her Hb, ferritin, TIBC done? Any history of constipation, gastritis, black stools, or intolerance to iron? Is she on levothyroxine (thyroxine)? For adults, iron syrup is usually given as 30–60 mg of elemental iron once daily after food. Exact brand doesn’t matter — choose any ferrous ascorbate or ferrous fumarate syrup. But keep at least 4 hours gap from thyroid medication. Better to check Hb and ferritin if not done recently.
