Hello there,,,,,well ankle sprains are quit painful but luckly they heal quickly too..... however sprains around ankle can be severe too....initially all ankle sprains will pain...and there will be swelling and pain on movement....the best thing to do in this scenario which you already did is to apply ice...if you can put crush ice in a plastic bag and then apply over the ankle with a towel covering...then its the best thing....
Also try and keep your leg elevated over pillow to reduce the swelling....some Physios do advice putting crepe bandage for compression...however i am not very satisfied with the results i got on my athletes n patients with it...so u may or may not do it.
Next Steps
after your swelling subsides should be about 72hrs ie 3 days....try n see if u can bear weight....but if you still feel pain and the discolouration is there...then you need to go for xrays and possibly even MRI to rule out ligament injury.
