The history suggests delay in functional language and communication rather than only “speech delay.” Repeating words/sentences (echolalia) with difficulty answering questions meaningfully should be evaluated further, especially at 4.5 years of age.
Please get a detailed developmental assessment done by a pediatrician/developmental pediatrician along with hearing evaluation. Early speech therapy and behavioral intervention can significantly help language and social communication skills.
At home:
- Talk interactively with the child during play and daily activities
- Ask simple one-step questions and wait for response
- Encourage eye contact and two-way conversation
- Reduce screen time completely/minimally
- Read picture books and encourage naming + answering
- Praise any meaningful response attempts
Since the child already knows alphabets, numbers, rhymes and colors, learning ability is present, but communication and comprehension need proper assessment and early intervention.
