Sciatic nerve damage
This is regarding My mother who is of age 52.
Basically it started 6 years ago, due to some form of sciatica she used to get severe leg pain just after standing for 2 minutes which forced her to return to bed . It was quite disabling. There was strong compression on the nerve and injections in the back didn't help.
Finally she was operated and broken disc pieces were removed during surgery. This solved the original problem of pain in leg but after surgery till date she suffers from cramps in that leg every night.
It has been so many years now..is it that nerve permanently got damaged due to compression? What can be done to help it. Can it be restored to normal or only symptomatic management possible.

It would be useful to rule out other causes of cramps.
Get the folllowing blood investigations: CBC with ESR and CRP, vitamin D levels, uric acid, vitamin B12 levels, fasting blood sugar, TSH. An Emg and ncv of the lower limbs will also be helpful. Start her on calcium and vitamin E supplements. Review with investigations.

Hello , first thing need to know what exact surgery was done in her case. Usually recurring of the symptoms after the surgery in such cases indicate a possibility of instability at the operated level . If possible pls post the x ray and MRI . She needs a a thorough examination to understand the problem. She might also have these symptoms due to cause unrelated to index surgery.

Cramps can have multiple reasons
Calcium deficiency
Vitamin E deficiency
Less blood flow
Cold at night.
Nerve conpression usually leads to tungling ,numbness or weakness of muscle.

u can choose to get electromygraphy and nerve conduction velocity study to rule out neuropathy.
