Since your father has not responded to treatment and in addition, X ray is also normal, I believe that the cause of pain is still unknown. Advising treatment without treating the cause may not be the best management. It is better to visit me or some other Orthopedic in clinic for detailed examination and diagnosis

Please consult a Physiotherapist at the earliest. Exercises and stretches would definitely help.

Towel Hamstring Stretch Lie on the back, supporting the thigh with the hand or with a towel wrapped around it.. Slowly straighten the knee until a stretch is felt in the back of the thigh, trying to get the bottom of the foot to face the ceiling, one leg at a time. Hold the position initially for 10 seconds, and gradually work up to 20 to 30 seconds. Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core Strengthening Exercise- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day.

In my opinion you need to go for physiotherapy sessions on a regular basis... after pain reduction start doing few exs... like static quadriceps, vmo stretching , staright leg raising ,hamstring curls..no exs till pain subsides and Do hot fermentation twice a day...take care get well soon...

Greetings, sorry about the knee pain.  Your description about knee pain is little less, but still your father's pain is related to muscles. Muscles at back thigh are tight with abdominal muscles weakness accompanied by buttocks muscles weakness.
Next Steps
stretching hamstrings and buttock muscles will help along side ice to knee for 5 min twice a day. massage calf muscles (area behind leg) and muscles at back thigh.  should help reduce pain, if not relief pain.
Health Tips
if any photos of knee and x ray available will exactly say what ex should your father do and how to settle this once for all.  Remember knee pain is curable, no matter the age.

Knee pain could be because of many reasons...... Commonest being osteoarthritis followed by ligament and meniscal injuries it may be inflammation in the joint or even a simple bursitis...... Diagnosis can only be made after physical evaluation of your father.... Does he have pain when he climbs stairs or is it more in the morning or more of a constant pain? .... Please visit a well qualified physiotherapist near your area for a thorough evaluation ...

Hello sir, The information provided by you is little less, I would like to know about any past injuries,  or ligament tear,  or fractures around the area or it could be age related too... So for now you can go for icing if it's on the joint and swelling around it but if it's not swollen then can go for hot fermentation
Next Steps
Patient should get it checked from a physio,  go for leg stretching exs, isometric strengthening for knee, manipulation to realign the joint by a trained mulligan practitioner
Health Tips
Avoid sitting with legs hanging,  avoid sitting by making a lap, avoid standing for a longer duration.. Walking is always advisable,. For more details u can contact me
