Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician.
Your case has been allotted to me.
I understand your concern. Inderal (Propranolol) is a beta blocker that helps control anxiety, palpitations, tremors and sometimes blood pressure. It should never be stopped suddenly, as abrupt withdrawal can cause rebound increase in heart rate, anxiety or blood pressure.
â
Advices
The dose should be tapered gradually over one to two weeks.
Both tapering methods you mentioned can work, but the preferred and safer way is to reduce the total daily dose slowly rather than dropping one full dose suddenly.
Hence, taking 5 mg twice a day for a week is gentler on the body than 10 mg once daily.
What to Monitor
Heart rate and any recurrence of palpitations or anxiety.
Lightheadedness, dizziness or tiredness.
Management
After taking 5 mg twice daily for one week, you may then shift to 5 mg once daily for another 5 to 7 days, and then stop completely if you remain symptom free. If the medicine was prescribed for anxiety or migraine prevention, it is best to inform your doctor before stopping.
When to Consult a Doctor Immediately
If heart rate increases suddenly or you feel chest discomfort.
If you develop excessive sweating, tremors or dizziness.
Every patientâs tapering plan may differ depending on the reason for taking the medicine. It is best to confirm your taper schedule once with your prescribing doctor to avoid withdrawal effects.
