Rabies booster dose related

2026-08-12 05:14:08
Hello,I have had completed my rabies PEP (5 dose) on 28th April 2026(5th dose) with Rabivax-S. I checked my rabies antibody level on 12th July 2026 with value of 3.21 Eu/ml. On 9th August 2026 an aggressive stray dog passed very close to my leg.So out of fear I took one booster of Rabivax-S on 10th August 202. Now I feel I took this booster shot unnecessarily. Is there any harm if I don't take second booster now?I am worried if getting so many vaccines can cause any side effects. So far no major side effects Please advise. Thanks

To clarify — a dog merely passing close to your leg without any actual bite, scratch, or lick on broken skin/mucosa isn't a WHO Category II or III exposure, so it doesn't require a booster at all, regardless of antibody levels. Your July titer of 3.21 EU/mL is well above the protective threshold (0.5 EU/mL), so you were already adequately protected. The booster you took on 10th August wasn't harmful, just unnecessary — rabies vaccine doesn't carry meaningful risk from an extra dose, so no need to worry on that front, and you do not need a second booster now. That said, since you're anxious about future exposures and vaccine frequency, it may help to go through when boosters are actually indicated (only for confirmed Category II/III bites going forward, given your current immune status) so you're not second-guessing every future incident. Happy to walk through this in a consult if it'd help put your mind at ease

Booster dose is not required for 3 months after the last dose of vaccine. So you took it unnecessarily.  However, there is no side effects so be relaxed about it.

Since you already took one extra dose on 10 August, don't take another dose merely because you feel you need to complete a booster schedule. One unnecessary dose is unlikely to cause serious harm; local pain, swelling, fever or mild systemic symptoms can occur.

According your statement  5 doses of Rabies Vaccination ( post-  Exposure -Prophylaxis) has been completed And  Rabies antibody value is good Enough to protect from Rabies infection.. Another Rabies dose was not necessary as there's no history of 2nd episode of Dog bite/ Exposure. Booster Dose Schedule for Post Exposure Prophylaxis.. 1) Day - 0   Give fist Booster dose  after Exposure 2) Day - 3 Give 2nd and final Booster dose 3) Rabies Immunoglobulin ( RIG) not needed.
