Thank you for asking. Yes, some people are naturally more emotionally sensitive, and they may experience emotions, criticism, relationships or stressful situations more intensely. However, “highly sensitive person (HSP)” is not a mental disorder or a diagnosis.
If you relate to descriptions in a book, it can be useful for self-understanding, but it does not necessarily mean that you need counselling. Meditation, grounding, adequate sleep, regular exercise and learning emotional-regulation skills can be helpful.
However, if your sensitivity is causing persistent anxiety, overthinking, difficulty in relationships, frequent emotional overwhelm, avoidance or affecting your daily functioning, counselling can be useful. A psychologist can help you understand your individual triggers and develop healthier coping strategies.
You don’t need to label yourself as “too sensitive.” The goal is to understand your sensitivity and learn how to manage it effectively.
