Hello!
Thank you for reaching out and considering this a safe space to express yourself. We appreciate you in exploring and trying to understand how to navigate anxiety and stress.
The past year in itself has been very traumatic and emotionally difficult to navigate. Due to the constant inflow of news and emotionally disturbing situations, there can be increased stress, anxiety, overthinking among others.
There can be a number of things that one can do to deal with these overwhelming situations. It depends on person to person, and how one copes with the conflicting emotions.
For many people, working with themselves can be more supportive and comfortable. Some of the things you can try doing are:-
- Recognise your patterns of thinking- when one realises they are starting to think in a negative pattern or a âspiralâ where one thought leads to another- acknowledge that you are thinking about something and âcatchâ it. Catching your thoughts involves acknowledging that you are thinking about something and stopping yourself.
- Post stopping, try to either physically move, or divert your attention to something else. A helpful technique is using deep breathing. A short session of mindful meditation, breathing or engaging in something that requires concentration can be helpful.
- Try to engage yourself in activities with others- that allow you to talk out your feelings and intentions. This could be people you find allies or emotionally close with, or a mental health practitioner. Engaging with these allies in activities, will allow bonding and easing out conversations which will also provide added perspective.
- In terms of stress, it can be helpful to identify the reasons or activities that cause stress. Once identified, create boundaries that allow you to separate from the stress. For example, if news gives you stress- create boundaries like watching news only for one hour in the evening so as to not impact you sleep negatively.
For others, they navigate better in the counselling process- which allows them the safe space to express and understand how and why stress impacts them and how to work with it. In this sense, it can be very helpful if one reaches out to to professional mental health practitioners who would be able to support and aid one in their journey to dealing with stress.
