hi, retainers prescribed to you only after orthodontic treatment. to hold the moved teeth in position till your gingival / gum fibers adopts for a new position of the teeth. which it requires minimum 300 days (10 months wearing is necessary) . the time durations depends to the type of malocclussion treated.

orthodontic retainers ate given after the end of ortho treatment to prevent relapse of teeth. Retainers are fixed or removable type. Minimum wearing period 6 -12 months. Thank you.

As mentioned by fellow colleagues, they are used to keep teeth in their new acquired position by the braces treatment, so that they settle into this position for long term functional benefits. Their wear can be from continuous initially to few hours per day later on depending on how severe the case was to begin with.

retainers are a custom made device, which is made of wires or clear plastic, that hold teeth in position after surgery or any method of realigning teeth...usually orthodontist gives you it after completion of treatment to prevent teeth from reverting to their previous position...

retainers are appliances usually given after a orthodontic (braces) treatment, to hold the teeth in the newly moved position.  if you are not wearing the retainers, the forces of tongue or lips might push the teeth back to its previous position.
