Root canal treatment is usually required for the teeth that are structurally weak in themselves and that is why caps are suggested for these teeth after the treatment is over. I am sure the broken portion can be repaired back before a cap can be fabricated for the same tooth. Get a dental checkup done and if tooth is not broken more than 40% post and crown will be sufficient. Less than that only filling and crowning will do.
