Root canal treatment is usually required for the teeth that are structurally weak in themselves and that is why caps are suggested for these teeth after the treatment is over. I am sure the broken portion can be repaired back before a cap can be fabricated for the same tooth. But it is possible to give a rational opinion only after look at the clinical condition of the tooth. It would be better if you consult your dentist regarding this query for a better opinion. Trust me that no dentist would prefer extraction over root canal treatment and that also one which is completed successfully. It is not only your money but the time and effort of the dentist which is at stake.
Regards.
