Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin infection caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV), part of the poxvirus family. It leads to the development of small, benign, raised lesions or bumps on the skin. Symptoms -Lesions: Small, firm, and round bumps with a central dimple or indentation. - **Color**: Flesh-colored, white, pink, or yellow. - **Size**: Typically 2-5 mm in diameter. - **Distribution**: Can appear singly or in clusters. - **Location**: Commonly on the face, neck, armpits, arms, hands, and genital area. In children, they often appear on the trunk, face, and limbs. - **Discomfort**: Usually painless, but can become itchy, red, or swollen if irritated or infected. #### Transmission - **Direct Contact**: Skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. - **Indirect Contact**: Through contaminated objects like towels, clothing, toys, and gym equipment. - **Sexual Contact**: Genital lesions can be spread through sexual activity. - **Autoinoculation**: Spreading the virus to different parts of the body by scratching or touching the lesions. #### Risk Factors - **Age**: Most common in children aged 1-10 years. - **Immune System**: More common in individuals with weakened immune systems. - **Skin Conditions**: People with eczema are more susceptible. - **Lifestyle**: Close physical contact, shared use of personal items, and sexual activity increase the risk. #### Diagnosis - **Clinical Examination**: Diagnosis is usually based on the appearance of the lesions. - **Biopsy**: In rare cases, a biopsy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis. #### Home Care and Prevention - **Avoid Scratching or Picking**: Prevent spreading by not scratching or picking at the lesions. - **Good Hygiene**: Wash hands frequently and avoid sharing personal items. - **Cover Lesions**: Use bandages to cover lesions, especially in children, to prevent spreading. - **Avoid Close Contact**: Avoid close physical contact with others, especially in settings like schools, gyms, and swimming pools. - **Sexual Precautions**: Use condoms and avoid sexual contact if lesions are present in the genital area. Consulting a healthcare provider can help manage symptoms and prevent spreading.

Best way is to remove it, preferably by needling(usung small needle) by a dermatologist. Improper treatment will result in recurrence.
