There can be various causes for the leg pain, but nothing can be said without examining the patient. One advice I can give is that he can raise his legs by keeping 2-3 pillows and move ankle up and down for 10-15 min , it will help in pumping up the calf muscles and wash away the metabolites, thus help him to better sleep. If it doesn’t help consult a doctor.

Hello, as you have given limited information we cannot pin point identify the reason behind pain , but the pain can be of muscle origin due to poor strength. Stretching of calf muscles and hamstrings can provide relief along with hot compress over the area before sleeping.
Next Steps
See a general physician if pain persists.
Health Tips
Avoid crossed leg sitting and sleeping on the affected side till the pain subsides. Try changing the mattress if it is not comfortable enough.

If the pain is restrained only when he tries to sleep. Then it could be result of either calcium deficiency or hyper excitability of nerves in simple terms. Try taking warm milk, and a cold shower before sleeping. A further investagation from a neuro specialist is necessory.
