Root canal treatment is advised when the tooth decay has progressed to the inner most layer of the tooth (Pulp). Since pulp is highly innervated and inorder to remove infected pulp tissue local anaesthesia will be given . Hence making the root canal procedure painless and comfortable for the patient. The steps involve complete removal of decay followed by cleaning the canals . After cleaning and shaping the canals a filling material will be placed , sealing the canals till the root end. Post all this the cavity will be filled and finally covered with a cap. During the course of treatment the patient will either be prescribed antibiotics and painkillers or medicines will be placed directly in the canals making sure the patient experiences least discomfort.                        The number of sittings the root canal procedure would take depends upon :             1. The severity of the infection.                         2. Position of the tooth in the mouth.              3. Morphology of the tooth and canal anatomy and patentcy.                                                           4. Patient comfort and convenience.                If no challenges posed during the treatment root canal treatment can also be done in a single sitting.

No root canal is not at all painful. It is done under local anaesthesia. And also you'll get prescribed few medicines during the sittings which can extend upto 4sittings maximum.

Hi RCT treatment is done under local anaesthesia if it's a live tooth. So it's  absolutely painless procedure. Sitting varies between 1 to 3 depending on each case and severity.
Next Steps
if you have been advised for RCT by your dentist kindly do not neglect as it is irreversible. cavities that are not filled at the right time leads to RCT stage.  treatment only helps. medication won't solve the issue.
