Yes go for post ,when crown height is less due to damage Dr will suggest the post to strengthen the teeth life.

It’s better to do post and core build up for compensating the lost tooth structure. This procedure can increase the strength of the tooth and particularly this tooth is highly stress bearing tooth ,so Post and core buildup followed by prosthetic crown will increase the life of that tooth
