Iron deficiency

2026-07-07 06:38:17
Hello, Recently i lost 8 kgs weight through gym in 3 months. I was experiencing a lot more hairfall and widening of hairline at front while combing. So got the tests done. Hb was : 11.1 Rbc count : 3.62 Serum iron : 38 UIBC: 260.05 TIBC : 298 Transferrin : 208.63 Iron saturation % : 12.83 Ferritin : 22.4 Vitamin D3 : 67 B12 : 202 What should I do? Is the hairfall because of iron or the weight loss?

The hair fall is likely multifactorial: 1. Rapid weight loss over 3 months can trigger telogen effluvium, typically occurring 2–3 months after the weight loss. 2. Iron deficiency (low serum iron and low transferrin saturation, with low-normal ferritin) is also a likely contributor. 3. Borderline vitamin B12 deficiency may further contribute to hair loss and anemia.
Next Steps
1.Vitamin B12 supplementation 2.Oral iron therapy 3.Ensure adequate protein intake (about 1.0–1.2 g/kg/day)

Hair fall is not due to iron deficiency. Might be you are on intermittent fasting causing micronutrients deficiency causing hair loss. You can take further opinion on this by consulting on procto.

Just wanted to know if you are doing intermittent fasting. Coz sometimes micronutrient deficiency can cause hair fall.  Or it can be stress induced from strenuous exercise and hormonal changes. Hair fall can even be from excessive sweat and if not washed properly, coz of salty environment. Your iron levels, vitamin D and B12 are on lower normal range. Try to correct them with nutritional support. If that fails you can start taking supplements for the same.

Your report shows a deficiency of Iron + Vit B12 + Folic acid. This causes many problems besides hairfall. Take Ferrilip, One tablet daily. This will check your hairfall.

Get thyroid  profile,  blood sugar, serum proteins done and share results. Take supplements of zinc, proteins.  If scalp has dandruff treat it. B12 is lower side of normal,  you can take supplements for a short duration . Massage scalp with lukewarm natural oil like coconut or olive oil at least once a week.

Your reports confirm mild iron deficiency anemia: Hb 11.1, serum iron 38 (low), iron saturation 12.83% (low), and ferritin 22.4 (functionally deficient for hair — optimal is >50 ng/mL). Your B12 at 202 is also borderline low. Your hairfall is from BOTH causes: (1) iron deficiency directly weakens hair follicles, and (2) losing 8 kg in 3 months causes telogen effluvium — a stress-induced hair shedding that occurs 2–3 months after rapid weight loss and resolves on its own over 3–6 months. Start an iron supplement (ferrous bisglycinate or ferrous sulfate) with Vitamin C daily, and add a B12 supplement (500 mcg/day) or get a B12 injection course. Eat iron-rich foods: spinach, lentils, rajma, eggs, lean meat. Slow your weight loss rate — 0.5 kg/week is sustainable and hair-friendly.
Next Steps
Repeat CBC and iron studies after 3 months of supplementation to track improvement. Consult a physician for prescription-strength iron if oral supplements aren't tolerated. Please consult me directly on Practo for a detailed evaluation.

Your hair loss stems from both: the physical stress of rapid weight loss and low iron stores (ferritin) needed for healthy follicle growth.
