Can iron deficiency anemia show up as Normocytic hypochromic anemia on peripheral blood smear ? I have this anemia and my dr has prescribed iron pills. Isn't microcytosis the key feature of IDA ? Can normocytic hypochromic anemia be due to iron deficiency  ?

It is not necessary that IDA has a key feature with microcytic RBC. IDA in later stages show typical feature of microcytic hypochromic RBC picture . Otherwise in initial stages there can be normocytic RBC
