Hello! I understand how concerning it can be to find a rough, black spot on your scalp. There are a few different possibilities for what this could be. It could be something as simple as a harmless mole or a bit of pigmentation. Sometimes, even sun exposure can cause spots to develop on the scalp, especially if you have thin hair or a bald spot. However, a rough texture might mean there is more going on.
In some cases, these spots can be seborrheic keratosis, which is a common type of non-cancerous growth. They appear rough and dark and often get mistaken for warts. Another possibility is a condition called actinic keratosis, which happens due to sun damage and can sometimes develop into skin cancer over time if left untreated. This is why it is important to get any new or unusual spot on your scalp checked out.
The good news is that treatment options are available. If it is a harmless growth or pigmentation, we can sometimes treat it with a simple laser or cryotherapy (which is freezing the spot). But if there is any chance it could be actinic keratosis, we might need to do a biopsy to check for any changes in the cells. Based on the results, I can suggest the best treatment for you.
I would recommend scheduling a visit with a dermatologist to evaluate it closely. It is always better to be safe and catch any potential issue early. And do not worryâmost scalp spots are harmless and easy to treat once we know what we are dealing with!
