Fillings and its longevity

Why do dentists use composite over amalgam? The average lifespan of composite is 7-8 years while amalgam is 15 years which is nearly double. Plus amalgam has 40-50 years of longevity in many cases and can withstand chewing forces much better than composites. Although there is a debate regarding mercury content in amalgam but even the ADA and dental council of india hasn't prohibited it from using and usually inert in nature . Composites also have BPA which is cancer-causing. And why is gold getting so out of fashion and dentists do not practice gold inlays/ onlays?

Amalgam has poor asthetics, can't be used in class 2 cavities, chances of mercury lekage .plus proper tooth preperation is required which results in loss of healthy tooth structure etc. Gold is very expensive Composit on the other hand is asthetic, requires minimal tooth prep and is versatile material.

Gold fillings are very costly. Single filling will cost more than 50k. Hence the cost factor. Composite fillings nowadays are very aesthetic and durable. They also last as long as amalgam restorations plus they are exactly tooth colored. Hence, there is a shift from amalgam to composite

Hello, Good question. The main issue with Amaglam has mercury content which may cause leakage of the same. Composites has much aesthetics compared to amagalam. There are Gold Inlays and onlays still in practice but it requires skilled dentists and good labs to do it. another reason is that due to its colour its not so popular

No material is perfect. Every material has it's pros and cons but the one having least disadvantages are usually used.. composite can bond with tooth structure. If done properly they can last long. It's colour and texture matches natural tooth so doctors and mostly patients prefer it as everyone's mainly concerned with aesthetics these days.. from a clinician point of view it is less technique sensitive and takes less time for filling any cavity with greater advantages unlike amalgam..

In all honesty - material science keeps evolving and we pick materials that work best according to current trend and availability ! Every material has an upside and a downside to it and selection of material also depends on clinical situation, biting forces , age and general condition of the patient and affordability .. gold is the best even today ( hands down there is no other winner ) But how many will be willing to spend 40-50k for a single gold inlay or onlay! We do give an option maybe 1 out of 200 patients do pick gold ( especially if their astrologer says so more than their dentist ) .. plus there are very few labs in the country who are willing to make crowns and inlays of gold now .. so as a dentist practising in this age and time ( with a couple of amalgam restorations in my own mouth ) I would definitely prefer good company composites over amalgam mainly because of how composites have evolved with time and how close to nature the manufacturers are making it .. ( u will see dentists using them now but yes you will be charged well for a well done composite which can last a lifetime too) you can reach me out for a debate over this

Hello Composite feelings are more preferred because they are made of plastic and glass compound which can be aesthetic and can be color matched to the tooth being restored over the restorations . Also composite bonds to the tooth, making it stronger and less likely to leak providing additional strength and support
