Looking at the image, the swelling on the back (dorsum) of your wrist is very characteristic of a ganglion cyst — the most common benign lump that appears on the wrist. A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled sac that arises from the joint capsule or tendon sheath of the wrist. They are smooth, rounded, can feel firm especially when the wrist is flexed, and may feel fixed (less moveable) when larger. They are very commonly seen in women of your age and do not indicate anything dangerous. Being a breastfeeding mother increases repetitive wrist strain from lifting and holding the baby, which can aggravate existing ganglion cysts and make them more noticeable. This does not affect your ability to breastfeed at all.
Next Steps
See an Orthopaedic surgeon or hand surgeon for an in-person evaluation — they will confirm the diagnosis with a physical examination and possibly an ultrasound of the wrist. Treatment options include: (1) Observation — many ganglion cysts reduce in size or disappear on their own over weeks to months; (2) Aspiration — a simple office procedure where the fluid is drained with a needle under local anaesthesia; (3) Surgical removal — for persistent or recurring cysts. In the meantime, use a wrist support brace for comfort, and try to vary the way you hold or lift the baby to reduce strain on that wrist. Please consult me directly on Practo for a detailed evaluation.
