If you had mentioned to your dentist that the crown is going to be delayed, he or she would have probably reduced the contact with the opposing tooth, (to reduce the load on the tooth).
In this case, the chances of your tooth breaking (before you get a crown) may be less, but still you will have to be careful not to bite hard stuff on that side till the crown is done (a crown that fits very well with the neighboring teeth, physically and aesthetically)
And please try to get the crown done as soon as possible.
