Can rabies spread by sharing water?

2026-07-29 19:05:40
Hi, I was just curious about this specific scenario. If someone was unknowingly infected with rabies after contact with a dog but had no symptoms, could another person get rabies by drinking from the same bottle immediately after them? Is this considered an exposure? Does sharing a water bottle poses a risk?

No, rabies is not spread through a person who was previously infected. Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal or person only while the virus is active. It is not spread by someone who had rabies in the past and has recovered.

No. Rabies does not spread by sharing a water bottle, food, utensils or casual contact, even if the other person was previously bitten by a dog and is still asymptomatic. This is not considered a rabies exposure, and you do not need rabies vaccination for this incident. Human-to-human transmission has not been confirmed through saliva or shared objects.
Health Tips
Rabies exposure occurs when saliva from a rabid animal directly enters a bite, scratch, open wound, eyes, nose or mouth. The person who had contact with the dog should visit an anti-rabies clinic promptly for assessment and post-exposure vaccination, but people sharing their bottle are not at risk.
