Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been widely used in dental cilincs for over ten years. It is mainly used to create 3D image of oral and maxillofacial region to aid in a better diagnosis and thus a bette treatment.
The range of radiation dose in a CBCT is more than a normal dental xray and less than other CT scans done. So this is true it does cause radiation but the amount is less, moreover it is a great aid to the treatment that will be done by your orthodontist.

2. Tightly fitted
thyroid collar around the neck
3. Leaded eye shields
4. the patient should not be
pregnant

Following these guidelines given by the FDA the radiation dose reduces by 60 percent and thus provides a safe CBCT scan.
