Breathing problem

2026-08-11 04:30:50
My child is 3 years and 1 month old. When he is sleeping, his breathing rate is usually between 18 and 20 breaths per minute every time I did check up , and his breathing appears normal and comfortable during sleep. After he wakes up, when he is awake and calm, I checked his breathing rate and it is usually between 25 and 29 breaths per minute, again all time  I did check up Is this breathing rate normal for a healthy 3-year-old child? Why slow during sleeping .. should he need any evaluation

Hello..both the rates are normal.
Next Steps
Just monitor child and if there are other symptoms like cough or breathing difficulty, then you should consult.

Greetings awake rate of 25 to 29 breaths per minute falls safely within the normal resting range of 22 to 34 breaths per minute for this age group. The sleeping rate drops to 18 to 20 breaths per minute, which is a normal drop because metabolic demands and oxygen needs naturally decrease during deep sleep.A pediatric evaluation is likely not required if the child continues to look comfortable, has a normal skin color, and shows no distress while breathing. You should look for red flags such as nasal flaring, grunting, or the chest sucking in deeply under the ribs, which would indicate a problem.

These rates are within the normal range of 20 to 40. Little variations are acceptable. If he is not having any problems, no need to take any action

* During sleep: A respiratory rate of 18–20 breaths/min is normal. When children enter deeper stages of sleep, their metabolic rate decreases, so breathing naturally becomes slower and more regular. * Awake and calm: A respiratory rate of 25–29 breaths/min also falls within the expected range for a preschool-aged child. Awake children breathe slightly faster than when asleep because of higher activity and metabolic demand.
Next Steps
Not based on these numbers alone. Evaluation would be appropriate if there are symptoms such as: * Persistent respiratory rate below 15/min during sleep or significantly lower than usual, especially if difficult to wake. * Snoring with pauses in breathing (sleep apnea). * Fast breathing even at rest while awake. * Chest retractions, noisy breathing, cyanosis, poor weight gain, or recurrent chest infections.

Its normal and doesnt need evaluation . During sleep basal metabolic rate reduces and hence ventilation is reduced
