A very hard/flat mattress can sometimes worsen back pain, but there is no single “best” mattress for everyone. In general, a medium-firm mattress that supports the natural curve of your spine is usually more comfortable than an extremely hard or very soft mattress.
Choose a mattress that:
Feels supportive without creating pressure points.
Does not sag in the middle.
Allows your spine to stay in a neutral position.
Is comfortable for your usual sleeping position.
If you sleep on your back, placing a pillow under your knees may help. If you sleep on your side, keep a pillow between your knees.
If back pain persists for more than a few weeks, is severe, or is associated with leg weakness/numbness, bowel or bladder symptoms, fever, or significant injury, please get evaluated by a doctor.
