Arthritis (Knee pain)

My mother is 73 years old. She is currently suffering from arthritis for the past six months. Medications did not help. Is knee cap replacement is the only option? What is the success percentage? Please suggest if there is any alternative? - Karthik

Hello... Knee replacement is not the old option for knee arthritis... there are plenty of other options... most important amongst them is weight reduction and exercises (knee exercises and walking)... patients are also prescribed braces , walking stick and medications do help... if all these fail then total knee replacement is the option Knee replacement is a safe surgery if done by a trained Orthopaedic surgeon... it is one of the most commonly performed Orthopaedic surgery and has got excellent results...

We have many options in the treatment of knee arthritis depending upon how much damage has occurred to the joint cartilage. Knee replacement is indicated in end stage. If done well, success rate is near 100%.

IF SHE HAVE SEVERE OSTEOARTHRITIS, YOU SHOULD GO FOR TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT(TKR). OVERALL 95% TKR GET SUCESS IF U TAKE PROPER PHYSIOTHERAPY AFTER JOINT REPLACEMENT. IF YOU WANT TO AVOID JOINT REPLACEMENT, THEN YOU SHOULD GO FOR PHYSIOTHERAPY. MANY THERAPY ARE THERE LIKE ULTRASONIC, WAX THERAPY AND IFT FOR PAIN RELIEF AND SOME EXERCISE FOR QUADRICEPS AND HAMSTRING MUSCLE. AND AVOID CROSS LEG SITTING AND DONT FOLD KNEE AFTER 90 DEGREE

Avoid sitting Cross legged. Avoid Squatting- Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core Strengthening Exercise- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams Stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports Taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area Contrast Fomentation (Hot and Cold).

Good morning I sustained pain and loss of functional Independence might very well be suggestive of TKR. However she needs to take physiotherapy treatment in either ways of treatment approach. Pre-operative physiotherapy is a must for faster recovery. If you don't put for surgery then she would need maintainence physiotherapy on regular basis.

If she is having severe osteoarthritis and having pain with sustained  walking or standing, she would benefit well from  knee replacement. Overall 95 %  of knee replacements work well for 15-20 years. She may have alternatives if arthritis is not severe. For that she needs to see an orthopaedic doc

As per the query Mr. Karthik, I understand that your mother has Osteoarthritis, and you want to know that is knee arthroplasty(replacing the Knee joint (totally / partially) ) the only option. Mr. Karthik that totally depends upon, how bad the knee joint is. which is typically displayed in X-ray, and also how good you mother's will power is to overcome the condition. The condition is at times very painful. to handle and go along with. Certainly Physical Strengthening of the muscles (quadriceps and Hamstrings ) should do at least Half of the Work , as strengthening of the muscles will take over quiet good amount of body's weight and reduce stress at Knee. for this you can go an consult Physical therapist nearby. The other half of can be treated i.e. the root cause is by changing the footwear. to one that is comfortable and supportive at same time. and also modifying most used spaces so that they cause less stress for that you may need to consult Occupational therapist. also if , you mother is overweight reducing the weight will be a Plus point. rest, if possible an image of x-rays would help us clearly define what to do, and SUCCESS PERCENTAGE IS HIGH. Need not to worry. if post operative care is good. Occupational Therapist plays a major role in defining WHat NOT TO DO post surgery and physical therapist is responsible for strengthening and regaining range of motion.
Next Steps
follow the instructions.
Health Tips
if possible upload the X-ray Scans and STAY HEALTHY.
