So many medications are available these daysl for alcoholism. Without medication if person dependent on alcohol  try to leave it all of sudden he can have various withdrawl effects which are usually painful for patient. Start his treatment along with relapse prevention session later to keep him abstinent in future.  If he is not motivated enough then motivational enhancement therapy also can be tried.
