Accidentally cut my wrist

2026-07-01 14:41:21
Hi Doctor, I accidentally cut my wrist while opening a package with a cutter knife blade. The cut is small and the bleeding has stopped. I’m attaching photos of the wound and the blade. Could you please let me know if it looks superficial and whether I need a tetanus shot or any further treatment? Thank you.

Hello, The wound looks superficial As for tetanus vaccine, if you haven't taken it in the last 5 years, please do take one injection of TT vaccination. If you have taken TT vaccine in the last 5 years, then no need for repeating it now.
Next Steps
Please wash your wrist cleanly with running water and antiseptic like dettol diluted in water. keep the area dry, and wipe it with a dry clean cloth whenever it gets wet.

The cut appears superficial — bleeding has stopped and the wound does not look deep. However, a cutter blade is a metal object and any cut from a metallic instrument warrants a tetanus booster if your last TT shot was more than 5 years ago (or unknown). This is a standard precaution regardless of how small the wound is. The wound itself just needs proper cleaning and dressing.
Next Steps
Clean the wound thoroughly with antiseptic, apply an antibiotic ointment, and cover with a sterile dressing. Get a tetanus toxoid (TT) booster if your last dose was more than 5 years ago or if you are unsure. Watch for signs of infection (increasing redness, swelling, pus, fever) over the next 48-72 hours. Please consult me directly on Practo for a detailed evaluation.

Tetanus shot should be taken, irrespective of size of wound. Looks like a superficial wound. Clean it very well with some antiseptic solution,  apply mupiricin ointment and cover it.

Wound seems superficial but you do need a tetanus shot if not taken in last year's as precaution as the cutter is rusted. Do clean wound properly with betadine and apply a band-aid.
