Pranayama helps heal the upper airways, but is not a replacement of medicines like intranasal corticosteroid sprays. I usually advise my patients saline nasal washes and corticosteroid sprays to be used continuously for about 2-3 years. After about 2 months, I advise they start pranayama and swimming. Usually I am able 5o slowly reduce their dose of medicines from the 6th month and finally by the 18th month, patient continues with only the exercises and the saline nasal washes. This however is a lifestyle change that needs to be maintained throughout life otherwise the environmental factors that caused the sinusitis will cause further recurrences.
