ECT is chosen based on the severity of illness. It's safe and effective. But it is costly.

ECT has certain indication. Not that all psychiatry patients will get ECT. Let ur doctor decide what will best for her. If she is not taking medicine. You can go for injectable or oral dissolvable medicine.

Hello there. It is difficult to opine on your case specifically with the limited information. But for your clarity I would like to share a few points. ECT is indicated for certain specific reasons and not for all patients with mental illnesses. Severely suicidal patient (because of an illness and not as a reaction to some sudden stress), severely depressed patients, psychotic/manic /depressive patients who take a long time to respond to medications and/or if they are extremely aggressive/agitated/catatonic are some common indications. Contrary to popular media portrayal, ECT is not given as a punishment and neither is it harmful. If given rightly it gives good improvement and perhaps has lesser long term side effects. But because of the cost involved and the need for anaesthesia (which has it's own risk) doctors would prefer to give a trial of medications before going for ECT. I hope this clarifies some of your queries. Feel free to discuss with your doctor regarding your mother's diagnosis and need for ECT (if there is a need at all). Your doctor will be able to guide you well. Wishing your mother the best.
