There will be no long term side effects with this medication. Diabetes is  a chronic metabolic disease which can last for lifetime, if not handled  properly with diet and exercise.
Next Steps
Please follow the Diabetic diet. Do regular exercise 30 minutes walking. Check sugars once in a week with Glucometer. maintain fasting sugar below 130 and post breakfast sugar below 180. if the levels cross beyond that Please consult diabetologist.
