I injured my wrist playing football and the pain was so much so I was very sure that I had messed up my wrist. I went to ortho clinic near my house and saw an orthopedician who adviced an X-ray.
The X-ray gave me a shocker. It actually had two fractures out of which one fracture was definitely an old fracture. So I got a CT & MRI also done, and the findings were Fresh fracture of the lunate and Old fracture of the Scaphoid.
I went back to my Orthopediacian and I was told that the scaphoid has gap broken and since it was a old fracture it has gone in Avascular Necrosis so it is non salvageable. He would put me in a POP for the fresh fracture for 2 weeks and old fracture is anyway too late I was told I have to live with it at the price of developing Arthrisis in the wrist when I get old which would reduce my wrist motion considerably.
I’m 28, active in sports and this was real bad news. I took lot of opinions and almost everyone came up with the same thing. I was fortunate to know top radiologist in the city through my profession and I was referred to Dr.Sunil Gavaskar. Like most one would have reacted what a Name! 😬
I went to meet Dr.Sunil and breifed him the whole episode. He delivered the first piece of good news I had been hoping for. He said he can fix this and he even explained the surgical intrecacies.
The procedure he had planned for my Scaphoid Non Union was to use a Headless Screw and achieve union. He had also informed that on the surgical table he might opt for a graft also depending on the condition of my bone when he sees it cut open. I was little worried but if I wouldn’t trust him who else would I ? So I left it to him.
During the surgery it turned out that my joint was actually more complicated that we had anticipated. So he had taken a graft from the hip bone to unite my Scaphoid with a headless screw. I was put on POP time of 4 weeks but during subsequent review he convinced me and extended my POP time by another 2 weeks. I was a bit low at that time since I had my birthday and going around with a POP isn’t really exciting. But nevertheless, I am much happier now because my Scaphoid had completely reunited without any major restriction in movement.
Would recommend Dr.Sunil absolutely!
The doctor explained everything clearly during the consultation, and I felt the explanations were satisfactory.
