Vimentin is an intermediate filament protein present in cells of mesenchymal origin. A number of tumors coexpress vimentin and cytokeratin eg, thyroid carcinomas, pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands, and some renal carcinomas. Coexpression of desmin and vimentin has also been reported in a number of soft tissue tumors eg, rhabdomyosarcomas, leiomyosarcomas and alveolar soft tissue sarcomas. Vimentin is a protein that in humans is encoded by the VIM gene. Vimentin is a type III intermediate filament (IF) protein that is expressed in mesenchymal cells. All IF proteins are expressed in a highly developmentally-regulated fashion vimentin is the major cytoskeletal component of mesenchymal cells.
