What is sodium?

Sodium is an essential electrolyte in the body that plays a role in maintaining the water in and around the cells. Sodium also plays a role in the maintenance of muscle, blood pressure and nerve function. Increase or decrease in the concentration of the levels of sodium in the body can lead to diseases or conditions. Decreased level of sodium in the blood is called hyponatremia.

Why this test is recommended?

Your doctor may recommend this test if an individual is suffering from diseases or conditions like aldosteronism (excessive secretion of aldosterone hormone), diabetes insipidus, adrenal hypotension, abnormal antidiuretic hormone secretion, Addison's disease, dehydration, etc.

The doctor may recommend this test if an individual experiences symptoms like increase or decrease in the urine output, kidney stones, swelling of hands and feet, burning sensation or discomfort while passing urine, etc.

Precautions:

Drugs such as diuretics(water pills), NSAIDs (Pain killers), Prostaglandins (medicines used for the treatment of glaucoma or ulcers of the stomach), Corticosteroids etc may affect the test results. Hence, you are advised to inform your doctor about all your current medications before undergoing this test. may interfere with the test results.
