What is this test?

The Iron - Random Urine test measures the iron levels in the urine by collecting a random urine sample.

What is Iron?

Iron is a very important mineral needed for the body to stay healthy. The body requires iron to prepare hemoglobin, the protein present in red blood cells which carries oxygen to various parts of the body. Hence it facilitates oxygen transport in the body. The body can lose iron through urine or sweat. Iron is primarily eliminated from the body via feces and also a small amount is excreted through urine.

Why this test is performed?

Generally, this test is not a routine test. Your doctor may ask to perform this test in individuals with a condition called hemosiderinuria, (a condition where there are high levels of iron in the urine) mainly due to iron overload diseases. Individuals with this condition may show brown colored urine.

Test Preparation

Inform your doctor if you are on any medications, have any allergies or underlying medical conditions before your Iron Random Urine. Your doctor will give specific instructions depending on your condition on how to prepare for Iron Random Urine.

No specific preparation is necessary for this test. However, follow all the instruction given by your healthcare provider.

Understanding your test results

Presence of very low levels of iron in urine is common and generally do not require medical intervention. Presence of high levels of iron in the urine may indicate a condition called hemosiderinuria. This condition occurs in individuals with chronic intravascular hemolysis. Intravascular hemolysis is a condition where the red blood cells rupture and release hemoglobin into the blood. This hemoglobin is then spilled into the urine. Individuals with iron overload diseases may also show high iron levels in the urine.

If you have higher iron levels in the urine, consult your doctor for further instructions. Based on the test results, your doctor may advise appropriate medical treatments, lifestyle modifications, or further diagnostic tests.
