What is this test?
The HER2 official gene name ERBB2 proto-oncogene encodes a membrane receptor with tyrosine kinase activity and homology to the epidermal growth factor receptor. Amplification and overexpression of the HER2 gene in human breast, endometrial, ovarian, and other epithelial cancers have been associated with a shorter disease-free interval and shorter overall survival. Overexpression of HER2 protein is an indication for Herceptin therapy in patients with breast cancer. Overexpression of the HER2 protein, amplification of the HER2 gene, or both, occurs in approximately 18-20% of breast cancers.overexpression of HER-2 has been associated in clinical evaluations with a decreased survival time and a decreased time to relapse in patients with breast cancer. Trastuzumab Herceptin is a humanized monoclonal antibody against the extracellular domain of HER2 and has been shown to benefit patients with HER2 positive breast cancer.
