The test is essential if you need a blood transfusion or are planning to donate blood. Not all blood types are compatible, so it's important to know your blood group. Receiving blood that's incompatible with your blood type could trigger a dangerous immune response. ABO type and Rh are needed to identify candidates for Rh immune globulin and to assess the risk of hemolytic disease of the newborn. ABO blood group system, the classification of human blood based on the inherited properties of red blood cells (erythrocytes) as determined by the presence or absence of the antigens A and B, which are carried on the surface of the red cells.
