What is this test?
This test is used to check for the presence of any abnormalities or damage to the vocal cord tissue. In this test, a small tissue sample of the vocal cord is collected to observe any changes, infections, toxicities, signs of damage or malignancies (cancers or tumors) which might have occurred in the vocal cord.
What is vocal cord tissue biopsy and why is it done?
The process of collecting a tissue sample of the vocal cord is called vocal cord tissue biopsy. The vocal cord biopsy is recommended to diagnose any abnormalities in the tissues of vocal cord like cancerous or noncancerous tumors, bacterial or fungal infection, etc. This test is recommended only when the definite cause of the abnormality is unknown. The collected sample is then assessed under a microscope for analyzing the cellular structure or to diagnose any abnormalities in the tissue of the vocal cord.
What is a Biopsy?
The biopsy is the process of collecting a small sample of tissue from various parts of the body. The sample for biopsy may include skin, the lining of the stomach, kidneys, liver, a fragment of bone or bone marrow, etc. This procedure is more like a minor surgery and an individual may recover within a day to one week based on the procedure. In this type of procedure, your doctor administers a small dose of local or systemic anesthetic during the surgery and collects a small sample of tissue from the suspected organ site and is sent to the laboratory for further analysis.
Why is this test done?
This test is recommended if you have any cough or difficulty in swallowing, unexplained lumps in the throat, change in voice, etc. This test is also recommended when regular tests are not enough to diagnose the presenting conditions/diseases like cancers, infections of the throat and surrounding tissues, etc.
Test Preparation
