This test is used to check for the presence of any abnormalities or damage to the liver tissue. In this test, a small sample of the liver is collected to observe any changes, toxicities signs of damage or malignancies (cancers or tumors) which might have occurred to the liver due to diseases, alcohol or certain medicines.
What are the functions of liver?
The Liver is the largest internal organ in the human body. The liver plays a major role in the digestion and metabolism of food in the body(conversion of food into glucose etc.). The liver is known to take care of many functions of the body which includes storing, processing of nutrients like sugars, fats, and protein, synthesizing blood clotting factors and certain proteins, processing certain medicines and processing various toxins.
What is a Biopsy?
The biopsy is the process of collecting a small sample of tissue from various parts of the body. The sample for biopsy may include skin, the lining of the stomach, kidneys, liver, a fragment of bone or bone marrow, etc. This procedure is more like a minor surgery and an individual may recover within a day to one week based on the procedure. In this type of procedure, your doctor administers a small dose of local anesthetic at the site of surgery and collects a small sample of tissue from the suspected organ and is sent to the laboratory for further analysis.
Why is this test done?
This test is recommended if you experience any symptoms of liver damage or liver diseases like abdominal pain, tenderness, unexplained fevers, persistently abnormal liver blood tests, history of digestive issues, mass in the upper right side of the abdomen, etc.
This test is also recommended when regular X-Rays and blood tests are not enough to diagnose the presenting conditions/diseases like alcoholic liver disease, chronic hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cancers of the liver, Wilson's disease, etc.
