What is this test?

An autoimmune gastrointestinal antibodies PCR test is used to detect the presence of gastrointestinal antibodies in the blood. This test helps to detect or diagnose an autoimmune disease affecting the gastrointestinal organs and the digestive system called autoimmune gastrointestinal dysmotility (AGID).

What is autoimmune gastrointestinal dysmotility (AGID)?

Autoimmune gastrointestinal dysmotility (AGID) is an autoimmune disease affecting the gastrointestinal organs and the digestive system. Dysmotility or motility dysfunction is a condition where the esophagus, stomach or intestines muscles do not work properly. Normal motility facilitates the digestion of the foods. In AGID this normal motility is disrupted. The exact cause of this condition is unknown. The signs and symptoms of AGID are diarrhea, constipation, bloating, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, etc. It is not a very common condition and most of these signs and symptoms can also be due to other gastrointestinal diseases.

Antibodies are proteins produced by our immune system to fight against foreign substances such as bacterias and viruses. Sometimes the immune system produces antibodies called autoantibodies that attack the body’s own tissues and cells. Autoimmune gastrointestinal antibodies are formed against the condition called autoimmune gastrointestinal dysmotility (AGID). The presence of high levels of autoimmune gastrointestinal antibodies in the blood may indicate AGID.

Why this test is performed?

This test is one among many primary tests performed to detect or diagnose the presence of autoimmune gastrointestinal dysmotility (AGID). Your doctor may ask you to perform this test if he suspects AGID or if you experience signs and symptoms of AGID such as diarrhea, constipation, bloating, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, etc. Your doctor may ask you to perform a few more additional tests to confirm the presence of AGID.

Also known as Autoimmune Gastrointestinal Antibodies PCR.

Understanding your test results

The test results may vary depending on gender, age, health conditions, and other factors.
