What is this test?

What is Tetracycline allergy?

Tetracycline is an antibiotic which is used in the treatment of a variety of infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. The common side effects that may occur with the use of this medicine is a loss of appetite, mouth sores, sore throat, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Tetracycline may cause teeth discoloration in the children. It may also increase the risk of sunburns when exposed to the sunlight. This medicine has to be only used on a medical prescription.

Tetracycline allergy is an allergic reaction of the body towards it. This occurs due to the immune response of the body towards the antibiotic tetracycline. The signs and symptoms of tetracycline allergy are skin rashes, swelling of the skin, discoloration of the skin, itching on the genital areas, dizziness, fever, nausea, vomiting etc. Sometimes the allergic reactions can be life-threatening anaphylactic reactions. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency condition which leads to facial flushing, itching, shock, sudden fall in blood pressure, constriction of airways, swollen throat, difficulty to breathe, etc.

Why this test is performed?

Your doctor may ask to perform this test if you experience signs and symptoms of tetracycline allergy such as skin rashes, swelling of the skin, discoloration of the skin, itching on the genital areas, dizziness, fever, nausea, vomiting etc.

What do the test results mean?

The normal reference range may vary depending on gender, age, health history, etc. If your test results show high levels of IgE antibodies than the given normal reference range, it may indicate that the person is most likely to have a tetracycline allergy.

If your test results are lower than the normal reference range, it may indicate that the person is unlikely to have a tetracycline allergy.
