What is this test?

This test is used to detect the presence of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies against rice in the blood. This test helps to know the immune response of the body towards rice.

What is Rice allergy?

Rice allergy is a type of allergy in which an individual is allergic to rice and may suffer from symptoms such as itchy skin, vomiting, diarrhea, atopic dermatitis, swelling in the throat, difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath, skin rashes etc. In severe allergic condition, an individual may suffer from life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

The immune system in the individuals who are allergic to rice will produce antibodies against some proteins that are present in the rice and they are 9, 14, 31-kDa proteins. These proteins are responsible for allergic reactions and can be found in oil, milk, flour, wheat, etc.

Foods to be avoided:

It is good to eat cooked rice as many proteins breakdown due to heat. However, if the allergic symptoms are still showing up then the individual should avoid consuming rice and its products. Individuals who are allergic to rice should avoid some alternatives to rice products and they are rice milk, rice bread, rice pudding, rice cakes, sushi, rice noodles, rice flour cookies, granola bars.
