What is this test?

Allergy Penicilloyl G Enzyme Assay Skin test is used to test the individuals for any allergy towards Beta-lactam derivatives/ antibiotics like penicillins, derivatives of penicillins like ampicillin, amoxicillin, etc. A small amount of medicine is introduced to a small patch of skin and observed for an amount of time. Your doctor may suggest this test if he/she suspects that the cause of your allergic reaction may be due to any penicillins or penicillin derivatives.

What is a drug allergy?

An abnormal reaction of the immune system of an individual due to consuming a medicine is called as a drug allergy. A drug allergy is different from a side effect. The side effects depend on the dose and duration of use of medicine. A drug allergy is more of a reaction of the immune system of the individual. When the immune system of an individual accidentally recognizes the medicine as a harmful substance. The symptoms may be immediate or develop later. The symptoms include skin rashes, swelling of face and lips, breathlessness, swelling up of airways, urticaria (swollen pale or red bumps on the skin), etc.

What is penicillin allergy?

Penicillioyl G is an antigenic form of penicillin G. The beta-lactam ring of the penicillin G combines with primary amino acids from the proteins to form penicilloyl G which causes an allergic response in certain individuals. To test the allergenic response of an individual the penicilloyl G is used. An Individual may be allergic to this medicine if he/she experiences sudden reactions like skin rashes, swelling of the face, eyes, lips, etc. If an individual is allergic to penicillin then it is very likely that the individual might be allergic to penicillin derivatives as well.

Why this test is recommended?

This test would be recommended by the physician as a usual screening test to rule out any possible medicine allergies or if you have/had experience of symptoms like severe itching, rashes, inflammation of the skin, runny or stuffy nose, difficulty in breathing, wheezing, mild fever, gastrointestinal upset like nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, etc immediately after consuming or receiving penicillin or medicine combinations which contain penicillin.

This may also be recommended to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment if you are diagnosed already

Precautions:

In case of an allergic reaction, immediately contact the medical emergency. Inform your doctor if you know that you are allergic to certain medicines. Your doctor may recommend you to carry an EpiPen (epinephrine injection) and avoid using medicines you are allergic to.
