What is an orange allergy?

Orange is a citrus fruit which belongs to the Rutaceae family. All citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. Oranges are full of nutrients and low in calories. They are available all over the world. It has a wide range of benefits. Orange allergy may happen when the immune system mistakes the proteins in the cells of orange for a foreign substance. Then the body produces a reaction similar to the one created during an attack of bacteria or virus. The symptoms of orange allergy include intense itching of lips, tongue, throat, skin rashes, burning sensation, blisters, reddening and swelling of the lips and gums, hives, flushed skin, swollen throat, mouth, etc.

Sometimes the allergic reactions can be life-threatening causing narrowing of the airways, making it difficult to breathe. Very less often orange allergy may cause an anaphylactic reaction. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency condition which leads to facial flushing, itching, shock, sudden fall in blood pressure, constriction of airways, swollen throat, difficulty to breathe, etc.

Foods to be avoided:

Since orange is a citrus fruit, other citrus fruits like lemons, grapefruits, etc should also be avoided. Avoid citrus fruit juices, freshly pickled citrus, citrus fruit seeds or rinds, citrus zest is often added while baking and to the salads hence carefully check the ingredients before consuming. Also, avoid unripe citrus fruits because unripe citrus is more irritant than ripened fruit. Artificially-flavored sweets and vitamin C supplements usually use citrus flavoring hence avoid them as well.
