Allergy Milk Panel Skin Test is used to test the sensitization of your skin to milk. This test helps in knowing the immune response to the milk and milk products. In this test, your skin is slightly pricked and introduced to the milk or its proteins.

What is milk allergy?

Milk allergy is a reaction to the milk, milk products, or the products containing milk by the body’s immune response. Milk allergy is one of the most common allergies seen in children. Mostly milk allergy is caused by cow’s milk, other than cow’s milk goats or sheep or buffalos or other mammal’s milk also may cause milk allergy. This reaction is experienced soon after the intake of the milk or milk products.

Milk allergy symptoms which appear immediately include wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, itching or tingling sensation on the lips or mouth, swollen lips, tongue or throat, hives, or vomiting, runny nose, watery eyes, abdominal cramps, loose stools, blood in stools, or colic in infants, etc.

Sometimes milk allergy can be life-threatening causing narrowing of the airways, making it difficult to breathe. Milk is the most common food that causes an anaphylactic reaction. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency condition which leads to facial flushing, itching, shock, sudden fall in blood pressure, constriction of airways, swollen throat, or difficulty to breathe, etc.

This test may be recommended to you if you are suspected to have a milk allergy. This test is also recommended if you experience certain symptoms like wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, itching or tingling sensation on the lips or mouth, swollen lips, tongue, or throat; hives, vomiting, runny nose, watery eyes, abdominal cramps, loose stools, blood in stools, colic (severe pain in abdomen caused by gas in the intestines) in infants, etc. This test may also be performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment of milk allergy.
