17-Hydroxypregnenolone, also known as 17-OH-PG, is a steroid hormone that is derived from cholesterol. 17-OH-PG is involved in the synthesis of cortisol, aldosterone and androstenedione in the adrenal glands. 17-OH-PG levels are measured to screen for congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a group of inherited disorders of the adrenal gland. High levels of 17-OH-PG in the blood indicate cortisol and aldosterone are not being produced in normal levels. This test measures the amount of pregnenolone in the blood in order to help detect rare forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH)
