Acupuncture needles, if sterilised and used, pose no risk of infection. The commonest side effect includes bruising at the site of needle insertion. Acupuncture is not recommended for individuals with bleeding disorders, pregnant women and individuals who have a pacemaker.

No prior preparation is required for acupuncture therapy.

The procedure involves insertion of needles which may cause mild discomfort or a tingling sensation.
